EUROFLO® slotted pipe onboard for KiwiRail’s Papakura to Pukekohe Electrification Project
A significant project is currently underway to extend electrification of Auckland’s metro rail network between Papakura and Pukekohe — and EUROFLO® slotted pipe has been selected for the project drainage alongside the railway track.
The ultimate goal for KiwiRail’s electrification project is to give customers faster, quieter and cleaner journeys in modern electric trains, to encourage more people to use public transport and reduce carbon emissions.
Engineering consultancy Jacobs is leading construction and engineering design for the project and chose EUROFLO® slotted pipes because the perforated pipes offer the ideal subsoil drainage option and are available in a range of diameters.
Standard perforated pipes available in the New Zealand market are typically only offered in smaller diameters.
Associate Civil Engineer (Water) for Jacobs, Eugene Salmin, says while the drainage design for the project was relatively simple the hard part was ensuring the multitude of services fit together within the constraints of the railway design.
“Having different options for the pipe sizes gave us greater flexibility with the drainage design for this project.”
As part of the wider electrification project, the Pukekohe Station is also being redeveloped to provide a modern public transport interchange.
The preparatory works for the redeveloped Pukekohe Station are one of the areas where EUROFLO® slotted pipes have been used quite extensively.
Across the railway project, Jacobs has specified EUROFLO® slotted pipe of 315mm OD, 250mm OD and 200mm OD.
Another reason the engineering team opted for EUROFLO® slotted pipe was because the pipe stiffness or ‘SN rating’ met KiwiRail’s specified standards for subsoil drainage.
Eugene says installation of EUROFLO® pipes is currently ongoing but delivery and implementation has gone smoothly to date.
