12 Aug Innovative Solutions for Keeping Culvert Inlets Clear
Fallout from flooding has caused issues for multiple regions around New Zealand and damaged roading infrastructure is often one of the biggest headaches.
When it comes to managing stormwater and maintaining the integrity of our infrastructure, preventing debris from blocking culverts is crucial. Below is a series of photos that highlight effective methods for keeping culverts clear and operational, featuring projects where our EUROFLO® pipes have been integral to the solution.
PROJECT: Glenbrook Road Bridge over the Waikari River, located in Putorino, Hawke’s Bay

This bridge on Glenbrook Road over the Waikari River is located in Putorino, Hawke’s Bay. You can see the attached sliding debris bars, designed to protect the crossing It is a WSP in New Zealand design using 6x 2100mm EUROFLO® Civil pipes and installed by Fulton Hogan Napier.
PROJECT: SH6 just outside of Kingston in Otago

A very tidy installation of EUROFLO® Civil SN8 about 1 km from Fairlight Station, just outside of Kingston in Otago. A bevel cut on the ends of EUROFLO® pipe is a simple and cost-effective way to obtain a smooth outlet from culverts located under driveways or roadways and reduce the snagging hazard of blunt culvert ends.
PROJECT: SH1 Brynderwyn Hills recovery and enabling works

In this NZTA Waka Kotahi project, Fulton Hogan recently installed a headwall for pipe running parallel to the carriage way. These became part of the drain and not only protected the drain from debris but act to protect vehicle occupants from the effects of vehicle impact. The SN16 EUROFLO® Civil pipe used in this project runs to a manhole where it then changes direction under the road.

In this same project, EUROFLO® SN16 Civil pipe has been connected to a concrete manhole. The manhole is then protected by a scruffy dome, which is designed for stormwater applications to serve as an effective debris screen for manholes.

Here the culvert inlet of this EUROFLO® SN16 Civil pipe has waratahs installed above it, providing protection from potential debris coming down the hillside.
PROJECT: Wingwall inlet protection, Central Otago
This culvert has a steel grille debris screen for wingwalls, designed to prevent the build-up of debris, as well as stop people and animals from entering the culvert.
